Fall Style Guide

Outfit Inspiration for Fall Family Photos

Fall is here! I am so excited for the cooler weather and and Pumpkin Spice Lattes (PSL) at Starbucks. This year is going to be one of my busiest seasons to date. I'm so excited to photograph some past and new clients this fall! To help you have the best experience I've created some fall outfit inspiration to help you plan for your upcoming session!

These outfits are to be used as a guide, it doesn't mean you need to follow them to a “T”, and you maybe have similar pieces in your closet already.

It's all about pairing neutrals with a hint of color (usually a muted color, think: whites, tans, mustard, muted wine colors, dusty blues, tans, grays, sage, etc). In Spring, Fall and Winter I always suggest adding layers to your outfits as well.

Layers photograph really nice and it also helps incase the weather turns out to be cooler than planned. Layers like cardigans, jackets, vests are the perfect finishing touch!

The end goal of your photos isn't to look back in 10 years and say "ah, what did I wear!" it's about the love and connection with your family that I want to be the center focus, so wearing something timeless helps achieve that.

5 BASIC TIPS FOR PLANNING FAMILY OUTFITS

1. Coordinate your outfits by finding a color palette you love and finding pieces that compliment one another. Avoid matchy-matchy and black as your main color. Soft, muted colors and neutral colors look great for my style of photography, please avoid bright/neon hues.

2. Layer and add accessories with a hat, headbands, necklace, jacket, or vests. Layers especially helps when the weather turns out to be cooler than planned

3. Wear clothes that are fashionable, yet still functional for the location. Keep in mind we will be moving around!

4. When it comes to patterns, a good rule of thumb is have one or two patterned outfit for every three people included in the session. Floral prints, small polka dots or stripes, light plaids work great! Also, avoid logos. I typically like to start by finding a floral dress for mom or a daughter and then building the rest of the "ensemble" surrounding that piece, pulling colors out of the dress or that compliment.

5. Shoes! Remember that you'll want them to be comfortable as we move around, however please stay away from character themed shoes, athletic shoes, and bulky soles.

6. If you are looking to purchase new clothes, my favorites are Old Navy, H&M, Zara, Nordstroms, Target, as they are very affordable, many times coordinate well from baby sizes to adults sizes, and have timeless pieces that photograph well.
